Plan your journey from York Railway Station
From York Railway Station (via the A1036) you’re just a 10-minute drive from the centre of York, with its extensive shopping facilities, historic monuments and fascinating museums. There’s so much to see and do in this vibrant city, it’s hard to know where to turn first. But topping most visitors’ to-do lists is the famous cathedral.York Minster, said to be the largest medieval gothic cathedral north of the Alps, is a beautiful building with stunning stained glass windows and numerous religious and historic artefacts. Climb the 275 steps up the Central Tower and enjoy spectacular views from the highest point in the city.
Museum-wise you’re spoilt for choice. A number of award- winning options await, including York Castle Museum – charting the history of the city through displays and interactive galleries. Yorkshire Air Museum is also popular and features a superb display of aircraft, as well as displays on airborne forces and memorial gardens. The National Railway Museum is another must-see.

The bottom section of the North York Moors is also nearby, if you’re feeling adventurous.
Sutton Bank National Park Centre
Just under an hour’s drive from York Railway Station (via the A19) is Sutton Bank National Park Centre. Aside from hosting a hi-tech exhibition, there are numerous walking trails, cliff-edge cycle routes, an information centre and tearoom to soak up. This promises a tremendous value, family friendly day out.
Whitby
Northern England is home to some of the finest beaches in the UK and North Yorkshire lays claim to a fair few of them. Whitby is just under an hour-and-a-half’s drive (via the A64 and A169) from York Station and well worth exploring. With two beaches, art galleries and local attractions including Whitby Abbey and the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, it offers a lovely day out no matter the weather.
